Three men are due in court after a cash delivery van driver was threatened with a machete during an armed robbery at a Coventry supermarket.

Police were called to Tesco at Clifford Bridge Road, Walsgrave, around 7.30am on Tuesday.

Three men wearing balaclavas had threatened the driver with a machete before getting away with a cash box.

Police later recovered a machete and cash box in Minworth.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “Officers were called to Clifford Bridge Road in Coventry to reports of the driver of a cash delivery van being robbed.

“Three offenders wearing balaclavas threatened the driver with a machete. Fortunately he was unharmed.

“The men managed to get away with a cash box and left in a silver Mercedes.

“The car was later seen on the outskirts of Coventry and following a pursuit was stopped in Minworth."

Three men have been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery in connection with what happened.

Daniel Ferris and Sean Walker, both from Birmingham, and Aaron Collins, from Solihull, are all due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court this morning.

A masked gang who threatened a security van driver with a machete and stole thousands of pounds in cash have been jailed for a total of nearly 50 years.

The balaclava-clad robbers targeted the van in Clifford Bridge Road before fleeing in a silver Mercedes following the robbery at around 7.30am on January 9 this year.

Police described the incident as a "terrifying experience".

Officers traced them to the outskirts of Coventry and a police chase broke out.

They managed to stop the Mercedes in Minworth, near Sutton Coldfield.

The cash box and a machete were recovered from inside.

Aaron Collins, Sean Walker and Daniel Ferris tried to flee the scene following the chase but were quickly arrested by officers and later charged.

They were jailed for 17 years and 10 years.
