Armed police called to stand off in residential Coventry street

Armed police were involved in a five hour stand-off with a man following an alleged domestic incident in Coventry.

Officers with guns and dressed in full riot-clothing were called to Newdigate Road yesterday at around 4pm where they remained for several hours.

The incident only came to an end at around 9pm when specially trained police negotiators managed to talk the man out of the house where he surrendered to officers.

Throughout the incident in Upper Stoke, a police cordon was placed at either end of Newdigate Road at its junctions with Mulliner Street and Waterman Road.

Police riot vans were also used to block access to Mulliner Street to prevent traffic being forced to make a u-turn on the narrow residential street.

Residents were stood outside of their houses and looked on as police geared up in riot clothing, putting on the helmets and protection shields at around 8.30pm.

Armed police were also seen opposite a house where several other police officers waited.

A woman could be seen speaking into a window outside the house being guarded.

At least two riot vans, three police vans, a police dog car and other police vehicles were in attendance to the incident, along with two ambulance vehicles.

Residents along Mulliner Street told CoventryLive that they heard a man had a knife and injured himself, and barricaded himself in a house. This was not confirmed.

They also told us police started arriving at the scene around 4pm, it was reported to be over around 9pm - five hours after police turned up.

Paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service were stood one side of the cordon with a stretcher.

A spokesman for the service said and ambulance and paramedic officer were sent to the scene on standby however did not assess anybody or take anybody to hospital.

Officers threatened with a knife in armed police stand off

It has been revealed that officers were threatened with a knife when they responded to reports of an armed man.

The cordon was put in place for a number of hours after officers were threatened a spokesman for the force told Coventry Live.

A 35-year-old man was subsequently arrested.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "Officers attended a property in Newdigate Road in the Stoke area of Coventry just before 4.30pm yesterday (Tuesday 17 July) after receiving a report of a man armed with a knife.

"Upon arrival, officers were threatened with a knife before a cordon was put in place for a number of hours.

"A 35-year-old man who had the knife and had barricaded himself inside the house, was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and remains in police custody this morning (Wednesday 18 July)."

Man appears in court after five hour armed police stand-off

A man who was charged after an armed police stand-off has appeared in court.

Alexander Watt was charged with criminal damage and affray after officers were called to Newdigate Road at around 4pm on Tuesday, July 17, where they remained for several hours.

Watt, 35, appeared at Coventry Magistrates' Court on Thursday, July 18.

The case has been sent to Warwick Crown Court where a provisional date has been set for a hearing on August 16.

He has been given bail with some restrictions.
