Meriden man killed in Spanish Pyrenees accident

Two Britons who died in a hiking accident in the Spanish Pyrenees have been named as John Peter Field and Richard Christopher Greenwood.

The Foreign Office has said it is investigating the men's deaths.

They were reported to have fallen into an ice field near the 9,000ft high (2.7km) Pico de Frondiellas in the Sallent de Gallego region.

A third male member of their party also fell in the accident on Tuesday but is understood to be uninjured.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said it was providing consular assistance.

Mr Field, 57, is believed to be from from Meriden, near Coventry, while Mr Greenwood, 56, is reportedly from Dewsbury in West Yorkshire.

The men were believed to have been hiking along a route which was covered with packed ice and snow when the accident happened.

According to the Spanish media the men had appropriate equipment for their expedition.

The area, which is in the Huesca province in north-east Spain, is popular with climbers during the summer, but is dangerous when snow is present.

Spanish regional authorities said the men's bodies were recovered by mountain rescue services.
