Coventry traffic warden punched for checking blue badge

A man caught wrongly using a disability badge attacked a traffic warden who was trying to check the permit



Abu Tahir, 28 was found guilty of assault, after he punched the officer and wrestled him to the ground.

The council warden was doing checks in Gosford Street car park in Coventry, when he thought a vehicle may have been falsely displaying a blue badge and asked if he could inspect it.

But driver Tahir, of Banks Road in Birmingham, became aggressive.

The victim had to be helped by passers-by, including two paramedics who restrained Tahir until he was arrested.

Coventry City Council says he was using a blue badge that belonged to his grandmother, who was not with him at the time.

At a hearing at Coventry Magistrates Court Tahir was ordered to do 80 hours of unpaid work in a 12 month community order and pay a fine and compensation totalling £650.

Councillor Pervez Akhtar, deputy cabinet member for policing and equalities at Coventry City Council, said it will not tolerate violence or aggression towards staff.

He also criticised the "small minority" who bully council officers.

The incident took place on 22 August.
