A manhunt is underway after an elderly Coventry man died in a hit-and-run crash on the M42.

The 83-year-old was travelling in a Peugeot 307 with a 74-year-old woman when they were in collision with a Vauxhall.

He suffered fatal injuries but the 74-year-old was taken to hospital last night where she remains in a critical condition.

Police are still searching for the driver of the gold Vauxhall Agila which collided with the Peugeot.

The driver of the Agila is reported to have run from the scene.

The collision happened last night between junctions 10 and 11 near Tamworth Services at Atherstone, and affected both carriageways.

Highways Agency and Warwickshire Police closed the motorway for around eight hours due to the serious collision and an overturned vehicle.

Det Insp Tim Sharp of Warwickshire Police said: “The deceased’s next of kin has been informed and specially trained officers are offering support to his family.

“We’re currently working to locate the driver of the Agila and would appeal for anyone with information to contact us.

“We’re also keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or saw either of the vehicles prior to the collision.”

Anyone with information should call 101 and quote incident 441s of 19 August 2017.

Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org
