Terrazas sent to Coventry

Postby dutchman » Tue Apr 20, 2010 2:54 pm

Victor Terrazas is making a 17-hour car journey from Madrid to Coventry to ensure Friday's WBC super-bantamweight title final eliminator against Rendall Munroe goes ahead.

The Mexican's flight to Britain on April 18 was cancelled due to the ash cloud over northern Europe, caused by the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, a volcano in Iceland.

But promoter Frank Maloney took a break from campaigning as a UKIP parliamentary candidate in Barking to make alternative travel arrangements.

Maloney secured Terrazas a ticket on a flight from Mexico City to Madrid on April 19.

The fighter and his entourage will complete the remainder of the journey to England by chauffeured car and are due to arrive early on Tuesday.

"I have moved high and hell water to make sure the show goes on and nerves have been frayed," said Maloney.

"On Sunday morning I was very concerned, but managed to find a flight to Madrid where there were just a few seats left.

Top dollar

"The cost was top dollar, but that is a small price to pay. More than 2,000 tickets have been sold and Sky Sports viewers will be looking forward to potentially the fight of the year.

"A Spanish driver will make sure Victor and his team get to Paris safely and then a company I use regularly will have a luxury town car to finish the journey.

"The good thing for Victor is that we got him into Europe a few days before the fight and that gives him a chance to acclimatise and shake off jet lag."

Also on the bill at the Skydome, Olympic bronze medallist Tony Jeffries takes on Welshman Nathan King over six rounds and Kevin Hammond has an opportunity for revenge in a rematch with Martin Concepcion for the Midlands Area light-middleweight title.
