These are the grim injuries suffered by a have-a-go hero who stepped in to stop yobs battering a disabled man outside Coventry’s Skydome.

Warren Smith leapt to the defence of Christopher Nally when he saw him being beaten by strangers on Friday night .

Mr Nally, who suffers from a rare chromosone disorder and learning difficulties, was knocked out in the attack.

Mr Smith, 25, was left with serious injuries to his face and eye - including five broken bones in his eye socket and a bone fragment left floating behind his right eye.

Police were today hunting the attackers.

Mr Smith told the Telegraph that he was on a night out with his friend Richard when he saw Mr Nally being confronted.

He said: “I had no idea who he was, all I saw was a lad on the floor getting beaten up.

“It was disgusting, nobody deserves to be treated like that.

“Me and my mate were on a birthday night out when we saw it happen.

“I immediately went over to get them to stop beating Chris up.

“I said, if you want to hit somebody, then hit me. After that, they punched me in the side of my face.”

Mr Smith suffered five broken bones in his right eye socket, a broken and dislodged cheek bone, a broken sinus bone and a bone fragment floating behind his right eye.

He added: “They were spitting at him and punching him.

“I stood in the middle and calmly asked them to stop but they turned on me.

“I only realised the damage when I took a step back, put my hand to my face and felt blood coming out of my nose, mouth and eyebrow.

“All I was worried about though was if the lad was okay. How anyone can do that to somebody I don’t know.”

West Midlands Police are now scouring CCTV for more information.

A spokesman for the force said: “We were called to reports of an assault between 11pm and midnight on Friday July 14.

“We are checking CCTV - enquiries are on-going.”
