Sensors are being fitted to Coventry’s roads to help drivers find a parking space.

Plastic discs are being installed in all 450 on-street pay-and-display spaces.

The city-wide roll-out includes spaces in Bishop Street and follows a successful trial of the Appy Parking technology in New Union Street, Warwick Road and St John’s Street.

The app is free to download to your phone and uses real-time information to show which spaces are available and the maximum cost for the desired length of stay.

Drivers can also use the app to pay for parking.

Isn't it illegal to use your phone while driving?

A Coventry City Council spokesman said: "We would never encourage drivers to look at their phones while driving.

"Drivers can use their phones in a cradle – a bit like a sat nav - or phones can be held by passengers to relay space information to the driver."

The £150,000 funding for the project has come from the Department of Transport.

The city council says it forms part of the authority’s digital strategy which aims to improve the way businesses and residents access digital services for work and leisure.

Cllr Jayne Innes, cabinet member for City Services, said: “The on street parking bays are proving to be popular and the feedback we have had on the trial has been positive.

“This type of innovative project will make a real practical difference and I hope lots of motorists make use of the scheme.”

I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't read about them. They were also clamping vehicles in Spon Street this afternoon.

I was down the Watch Museum for a few hours today, (not open, maintence), and i noticed them, did wonder what they were. My thought was that they marked-out the parking spaces.
Some cars in Fleet St & Spon St were getting tickets!
