A BLAZE has ripped through an early years centre in Nuneaton.

Crews from the town's fire station responded to 999 calls made at just after 5.30pm this evening (Monday, May 22) to reports of a fire at Camp Hill Early Years Centre.

When they arrived, firefighters found the building was 'well alight.'

They called for back-up and two more engines were sent to the scene; one from Bedworth and another from Atherstone.

Fire crews used two hose reels, six breathing apparatus and small gear to extinguish the fire.

A specialist fire investigation officer was also called out to the scene.

Firefighters remained at the site for another hour before returning to their stations.

The cause of the fire is not yet known but, because the early years centre is on the Camp Hill Primary School site, a text has been sent to all pupils' parents and carers warning them that the school may not be able to open tomorrow (Tuesday, May 23).

On the text message it explains that the school currently has no power and it is unclear if the power will be back on in time for school tomorrow.

Major repairs needed at fire-ravaged Nuneaton centre before it can re-open

CHARITY bosses who run a fire-hit centre say major repairs need to be made before they can re-open.

It has been just over a week since a blaze tore through the Camp Hill Early Years Centre.

Investigations into the cause of the huge fire are still ongoing but chiefs at Barnardos, who manage the centre on behalf of Warwickshire County Council, say that works need to be undertaken to make major repairs – so the popular building will remain closed for the forseeable future.

In a statement, it reads: "We are grateful for the swift and effective response from the Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service who attended the incident.

"However, damage has been caused to the main reception area and the corridor, kitchen and toilets which means we have no choice but to close the centre until the repairs are complete.

"The building has now been secured and our staff are now working hard to arrange alternative venues, including nearby Barnardos children's centres, in order to maintain as many services as possible.

"We are keeping families informed of developments and are co-operating with the investigation by the fire service."

As a result of the fire last Monday (May 22) Camp Hill Primary School, which is based on the same site as the children's centre, was forced to close for two days as it had no power.

Fortunately no families were in the building at the time but staff had to be evacuated after flames took hold just after 5.30pm.

At the height of the blaze, four fire engines were needed to fight the fire, two from Nuneaton, one from Bedworth and one from Atherstone

Those who have more questions about the services are being urged to call Barnardo's 024 76378 600.
