A Coventry man piled more than £700 worth of items in to a trolley at Sainsbury’s and tried to stroll out of the front door without paying.
James Radford was stopped by security as he tried to leave the store, off the Fletchamstead Highway, at around 6pm on December 29.
Police were called and the 49-year-old, of St Michael’s Road, Stoke, was subsequently charged with theft.
Radford pleaded guilty to stealing items worth £767 and was given an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for a year, due to numerous past convictions of dishonesty.
He was also ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.
