Passengers on British trains have been slapped with price increases of an average of 2.3 per cent this week.

Public transport campaigners have warned it could "price" people off the railways.

The largest rise in three years took effect from January 2.

And the increase means travellers have been hit by a 23.5 per cent increase between 1995 and 2016.

The average increase in fares is the highest since January 2014, when prices rose by 2.8 per cent.

Tickets went up by just 1.1 per cent in January last year.

It’s another blow for train passengers after it emerged off-peak parking has been axed at Coventry railway station – meaning some people face a 140% price rise.
