A driver miraculously escaped serious injury after his van rolled several feet down a hill and finished wedged upside down in a ditch following a crash with a double decker bus.

The man in his 30s somehow managed to free himself from the van before emergency services had arrived and escaped with little more than back pain.

He was taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire as a precaution after being given pain relief at the scene.

The crash occurred in foggy conditions on the busy Birmingham Road roundabout at about 7.30am on Friday. Police and fire crews also attended the scene.

Following a collision with a National Express bus, the van rolled down an embankment at the Allesley Village Jubilee Nature Reserve before becoming wedged in the concrete ditch.

Nobody on the bus is believed to have been injured in the smash.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called a at 7.33am by West Midlands Police to reports of a van in a ditch,

“There was a collision between a van and a bus prior to the van leaving the road.

“The van driver was treated for minor injuries and taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.

“He was suffering from back pain and was given pain relief.

“One ambulance and a paramedic attended.

“No bus passengers were injured. By the time we had got there they had transferred to another bus and left the scene.”

A National Express Coventry spokesperson told the Telegraph the firm would assist with any investigations.

A statement from the bus operator said: “We can confirm that an X1 service was involved in an incident on the A4114 Pickford Way/Holyhead Road roundabout this morning.

“There are no reported injuries to any of the passengers on board. Emergency services attended the scene and we will assist them with any investigations.”
