Fire in Spon End...(updated)

Postby dutchman » Fri Apr 02, 2010 4:46 am

Firemen were called to a ground-floor property in Windsor Street at 4.00am this morning to deal with a blaze. Burning plastic, possibly from a window surround, filled the entire area with acrid smoke. It took firemen a considerable time to dampen the front of the building to a point where they could be certain the plastic wouldn't reignite again. The building was occupied by a family at the time but there are no reports of any injuries. The cause of the fire is not yet known. Arson is a possibilty and police were later called to the scene. Investigations were hampered to a certain extent by the number of drunken revellers who were in the same area at that time of morning.

It was just 50 yards from me Polly. I had to shut the heating system down to stop the fumes being sucked into my house.

Hope it's all settled down now and that the family are safe. Have they confirmed how it started yet ???? I assume you weren't one of the drunken revellers in the vicinity at the time :)

They are still living there although the kitchen window is now boarded up. The window had uPVC frames which quite litererally explode when subjected to intense heat. I've seen it happen before just two doors away from last night's fire. They should be outlawed.

It appears to have started in a refuse sack left outside the front of the building? I will know more tomorrow when I walk past it on the way to the chip shop.

I had just finished work on the PC Polly when I heard the pump from the fire engine outside and wondered where the noise was coming from?

It was a motorbike which was set fire to! The flames then spread to the front of the building. The heat was so intense it melted the petrol tank. The owner of the bike doesn't live in the property but often leaves it there for "safe keeping".

This is the building before the fire, it's the third from the left:

What :censored: idiots  Bet the motor cyclist is gutted. Thank goodness no-one was hurt.

Do you remember a few weeks ago there was a case in the paper where an elderly couple left their electric buggy in their porch and some :censored: set fire to it !!!! I'm sure that was in the Midlands - can't just remember.

It was in Rugby Polly. The fire spread to their sheltered accommodation and they both died. The alleged culprit returned a few nights later to start another fire but the police were waiting for him. A 16 yr old who cannot be named has been charged with manslaughter and is remanded in secure accomodation. An 18 yr old man was also questioned in connection with the enquiry but later released on police bail.
