Award-winning Skydome bar Carters closes after two and a half years in the city centre

A popular city centre nightclub has closed after rising costs meant the owner struggled to justifying keeping its doors open.

Carters nightclub, based at the Skydome Arena, welcomed punters for the last time on Sunday after throwing its annual fresher’s weekend.

The club’s owner, Kevin McCloskey, said in a Facebook post that keeping the bar and club open wasn’t financially viable at the moment.

He claimed that rising costs meant that it was difficult to justify continuing to operate the club.

However Mr McCloskey said he wouldn’t be leaving Coventry’s nightlife scene that easily - teasing that he would be opening a new venue next week.

The statement on the social media site said: “Last Friday I made a conscious business decision to pull out of the Skydome.

“I didn’t feel the need to go all “public announcement” on it for our final weekend and without doing so it turned out to be a crazy one as normal so Carters went out on a fantastic high.”

Carters hit the headlines last year when they were temporarily stripped of their licence following an incident outside the venue after it had shut.

It was subsequently re-opened though - with Mr McCloskey blasting police over the initial decision to close them down.

The bar and staff came back fighting, attracting a string of big names and hosting several packed out nights.

The venue’s popularity soared to such an extent that they were named the Best Bar or Nightclub Award in the inaugural Coventry Telegraph People’s Choice Awards.

The Facebook statement added: “I would like to thank the whole team from top to bottom who have been involved over the last two-and-a-half years in making Carters special and ultimately this years Coventry Evening Telegraph’s Best Bar & Club for 2016 as voted for by the public.

“Thank you to all that have attended the venue to eat, watch sport or party the night away. It’s been emotional.”
