A man from Coventry has died after a car smashed in to a railway bridge while being chased by police.

The fatal crash saw the BMW land on its roof while travelling on the A428 near Church Lawford, between Coventry and Rugby, at around 3.15am on Sunday morning.

The 43-year-old man was declared dead at the scene and Warwickshire Police say that his next of kin have been informed.

There was nobody else in the car.

An investigation has been launched by the Independent Police Complaints Commission and statements are already being taken from the officers involved.

A spokesman for Warwickshire Police said: “As is normal in such circumstances, the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission and they have confirmed that they will be carrying out an independent investigation.

“The A428 is likely to remain closed at the railway bridge near to Church Lawford for most of the day and drivers are being asked to avoid the area.”

A statement from the IPCC said: “We are independently investigating the actions of Warwickshire Police prior to a fatal road traffic collision on Sunday morning.

“A man, believed to be aged 43, died after the BMW he was driving was in collision near a railway bridge on the A428 near Church Lawford at around 3.15am.

“The initial indications are that the BMW was being followed by a Warwickshire Police vehicle prior to the collision.

“The IPCC has sent investigators to the scene and to the post-incident procedure, where the police officers involved will give their initial statements.”

Warwickshire Fire Service say they were called to the scene and found the car on its roof.

Crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to release one casualty from the car who was then handed over the care of the ambulance service.

Sad: some mother has lost her son, some wife her husband, some child their father.

Why on earth didn't he stop? Why push it into a chase where he lost his life?
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
