Jeremy Corbyn vows to fight for leadership and reshape cabinet

Postby dutchman » Mon Jun 27, 2016 1:28 am

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said he will stand in any new leadership election following the resignations of a string of shadow cabinet colleagues.

Shadow Commons leader Chris Bryant was the latest person to resign in protest at Mr Corbyn's leadership over the EU referendum - and more are expected.

Mr Corbyn said he regretted those resignations and would reveal a reshaped cabinet on Monday.

Later, Labour MPs are due to discuss a no confidence motion against Mr Corbyn.

The motion was submitted by Labour MPs Dame Margaret Hodge and Ann Coffey, and a secret ballot could be held on Tuesday.

Mr Corbyn warned: "Those who want to change Labour's leadership will have to stand in a democratic election, in which I will be a candidate."

He also said he had been elected as leader with "an overwhelming mandate for a different kind of politics".

"I am not going to betray the trust of those who voted for me - or the millions of supporters across the country who need Labour to represent them," he added.

"Neither wing of the Tory government has an exit plan. Labour will now ensure that our reform agenda is at the heart of the negotiations that lie ahead.

"One clear message from last Thursday's vote is that millions of people feel shut out of a political and economic system that has let them down and scarred our country with grotesque levels of inequality."

Corbyn seems to be one of the few politicians actually in touch with those that voted for him.

I personally don't think he's a leader, and I wouldn't want him as PM, but credit where its due.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Coventry MP calls on Jeremy Corbyn to step down as she joins mass exodus from shadow cabinet

Coventry’s Colleen Fletcher is the latest MP to resign from Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour shadow cabinet.

The Labour MP for Coventry North East was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Kerry McCarthy MP, shadow secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs (Defra) in January.

She stepped down this morning, calling on Mr Corbyn to resign as party leader.

Mrs Fletcher said: “As we head into a possible early general election we need to ensure that the Labour Party is in a position in which it can present itself as a potential government.

“Under Jeremy Corbyn, we have failed to make inroads into a divided and weak Tory government as such, the time is now right for him to resign.

“Many members have expressed their disappointment at the lack of leadership he provided during the EU Referendum and are equally disappointed at the result in Coventry.

“Some have even suggested that even though they voted for Jeremy in 2015 they would not do so again.

“So whilst I have the utmost respect for Jeremy he must now resign so we can move on and challenge for power at any upcoming general election.”

The resignations follow the loss of 12 members of Mr Corbyn’s top team on Sunday, with Hilary Benn sacked as shadow foreign secretary and 11 others quitting in protest at his leadership.

Colleen Who?

Most people in Coventry voted 'Leave' so she should be the one who resigns. :fuming:

Labour MPs pass no-confidence motion in Jeremy Corbyn

A motion of no confidence in Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has been passed by the party's MPs.

The 172-40 vote, which is not binding, follows resignations from the shadow cabinet and calls on Mr Corbyn to quit.

Mr Corbyn said the ballot had "no constitutional legitimacy" and said he would not "betray" the members who voted for him by resigning.

The leader's allies have told his critics to trigger a formal leadership contest if they want to challenge him.

And yet they had every confidence in Ed Miliband! :clown:

These MPs need reminding that they represent the people, it is not their job to 'persuade' the people.

Sadly, that is why politics is in the mess it is. People do not like having options forced on them, and most are more than capable of making their own minds up given the facts. - Something else that our political class are not very good at presenting. Fletcher ought resign.
