Bomb disposal experts were called to deal with a suspected unexploded bomb found in a garden in Coventry.

The specialist army team along with West Midlands Police were called to a property in Sutherland Avenue, Mount Nod, at around 10.45am yesterday.

A man who had been working in his garden flagged down a passing police officer after making the discovery.

Some surrounding houses were evacuated while the unknown explosive was removed. Officers left the property at around 2.45pm.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “A chap flagged down a passing officer at around 11.45am.

“He’d found something in his garden.

“Bomb disposal came and the item was removed by 2.15pm.

“We evacuated a couple of nearby houses.

“We don’t really know what it was.”

Coventry dad describes finding suspected WWII bomb in his garden

It was an eventful Father’s Day for Coventry dad Ian Jones - after he found a suspected wartime bomb in his garden.

Ian was doing a spot of Sunday gardening at his Sutherland Avenue home when he came across a rusting metal cylinder filled with ball bearings.

The army bomb disposal team was called out to Eastern Green and several neighbouring houses were evacuated by the police as the object was inspected and removed.

West Midlands Police could not confirm what the object was, but it is thought to be the remains of some kind of First or Second World War shrapnel shell.

Ian, 35, himself a former Army officer, said he’d been around enough explosives to know that the object could be a bomb and got his two children out of the house as quickly as possible.

“Basically I moved into the house just before Christmas time,” he said. “The garden was a bit over grown but I didn’t really bother with it.

“I moved a planter and it was just under there. Under like a square planter made of stone. It was quite heavy to lift up and move it.”

“I’ve just got out the army so I’d been around IEDs, so I thought it’s best to get the kids out of the house.

“I was dropping them off to my mum’s when I saw a police car. I asked the copper over and said ‘have you got a minute?’

“They phoned and left it to go through their chain of command.”

Ian and several neighbours were all evacuated from their homes while a bomb disposal officer inspected the find.

Ian said: “He’d not seen anything like it. He seemed to think it was an artillery round and the chances of it going off were very slim.

“He picked it up, had an inspection of it then took it off to dispose of it.”

Ian added: “It was an eventful Father’s Day. I’d like to know if the previous owners could get in touch to find out what it is and where it came from.”

A 'Rupert' knowing what an explosive looks like? :rolling:
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
