Coventry’s largest college has been hit with its second ‘inadequate’ Ofsted rating in less than three years.

Inspectors slated the effectiveness of the leadership and the quality of teaching at City College Coventry in Hillfields.

It was previously rated as inadequate in April 2013, although improved slightly in July 2014 before slipping again in the latest report from November 2015.

The trouble-hit college said former principal Steve Logan took the decision to resign and his replacement Dr Elaine McMahon, started as interim principal on Monday.

The latest inspection was carried out between November 23 to 27 and said: “Managers’ actions to improve the weaknesses identified at the previous inspection have been ineffective; much teaching is inadequate.”

It added: “Performance management of managers and staff is weak and has not raised the quality of provision to good across much of the college’s work.”

Mr Logan took over from John Hogg who had run the college on a temporary basis following the resignation of Paul Taylor.

Mr Taylor’s departure came as a dismal Ofsted report in April 2013 rated the Swanswell Street college inadequate in the three main areas of its inspection.

The college has an unhappy long-term history with Ofsted, which also gave it grade three ratings (requires improvement) in April 2010 and May 2007.
