Geoffrey Robinson hits back at retirement speculation

Coventry MP Geoffrey Robinson has hit back at speculation he could be about to retire just days after being re-elected.



The 76-year-old Labour MP for Coventry North West has re-asserted his commitment to serve his constituents, despite recently admitting to the Telegraph that health concerns may prevent him from seeing out the full five-year term.

Rumours are abound that he could stand down to make way for a high profile candidate from the Labour Party. Doubts about his future initially emerged after the Telegraph revealed Mr Robinson had planned to step down before the recent election – but later changed his mind amid pressure from party bosses.

Former shadow chancellor Ed Balls, a friend of Mr Robinson, is one of those widely understood to be a contender to replace Mr Robinson should he retire.

In a letter to the Telegraph, he wrote: “Please ignore all the spurious speculation. It’s just tittle tattle.

“As Mark Twain famously said, the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”

He added: “I want to express my gratitude and appreciation to the people of Coventry North West for electing me as their Member of Parliament.

“After talking to literally thousands of people on the doorstep and in the shopping centres I have been deeply touched by the personal warmth shown to me right across the constituency.

“The purpose of this letter is not just to thank you for your support, but also to give you my pledge to continue to serve the city and your interests with my fullest possible commitment.”
