Police were called to Leyside, off Middle Ride, Willenhall, at around 11am today to reports of a dispute between three men.

People living nearby told the Telegraph that the incident was a dispute between neighbours.

It’s been claimed that a man smashed his way into a flat and stabbed the men, aged 51 and 29.

He then returned with a pickaxe and hit the 51-year-old man over the head.

Neighbours believe the older man was protecting his son, who already had a serious head injury.

The attacker then ran off.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of wounding yesterday afternoon.

The two men were both taken to hospital with what were described as non-life threatening injuries.

The 29-year-old, who was stabbed in the stomach, has since been released from hospital.

His father, who suffered a variety of injuries including a fractured eye socket, is expected to remain at Coventry’s University Hospital for at least a week.

One neighbour, who didn’t want to be named, said: “I don’t think the people involved knew each other that well.

“We heard a commotion and before we knew it police were here.

“People are saying the dad was protecting his lad and he’s ended up with serious head injuries.

“There was blood everywhere – it must have been awful.”

The front door of the property was badly damaged in the attack and spots of blood were still visible on the pavement nearby.

Detective Sergeant Joel Mildenhall, from Willenhall police station, said: “Forensic scene investigators have visited the house and door to door inquiries continue.

“A knife has been recovered and we’re not looking for anyone else in connection with the assault.”

Anyone with information which may help Det Sgt Mildenhall should call West Midlands Police on 101.

If you don’t want to speak to a police officer, or wish to give evidence anonymously, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Won't surprise anyone who's ever lived there, and that's one of the better parts of the estate as well, up by the woods.
