Councils urge shoppers to support Small Business Saturday

Shoppers across Coventry and Warwickshire are being urged to rediscover their local high streets and support independent retailers this weekend.



Council leaders have joined forces with firms across the region as part of Small Business Saturday.

The aim of the annual event is to champion the small enterprises that help make the region’s high streets special.

Small Business Saturday is a national initiative that celebrates local independent firms, including the traders and retailers that contribute to the unique character of towns.

Coun Izzi Seccombe, leader of Warwickshire County Council and portfolio holder for economic development, said: “Warwickshire has a wonderfully diverse range of independent traders.

“They are a crucial part of our high streets, creating employment and contributing to the local economy.

“I would encourage everyone to make a conscious effort on Small Business Saturday to rediscover their local high street.”

According to local experts there are great benefits to the area’s economy by using local businesses.

The Federation of Small Businesses estimates that for every £1 spent locally, there is a benefit of £1.76 to the local economy, because the money remains in the region.

Coun Kevin Maton, Coventry City Council’s cabinet member for business, enterprise and employment, said the city’s small shops are vital to Coventry’s success.

He added: “We are very lucky in Coventry because we have a fantastic mix of independent shops providing a great range of goods and fantastic service.

“They add variety to our city centre and they complement the big traders, helping to ensure Coventry is a unique place to shop or enjoy a meal.

“Small businesses also play a part out of the city centre, but it’s not just about variety.

“They make a fantastic contribution to our local economy and they are vital to our city’s success, employing more than half of all private sector workers and we want to see them grow.”
