Thousands of volunteers for CAMRA undertook the thirsty work of finding Britain’s top local watering holes.

Each branch of CAMRA across the country picked the best boozer in its area - amounting to over 200 pubs in total, of which 30 are in the organisation’s West Midlands region.

They include The Nursery Tavern in Chapelfields, Coventry, and seven pubs in Warwickshire.

Thousands of CAMRA volunteers across the country judged their local pubs on decor, value for money, customer service, appeal to different demographics and the quality of their real ale.

All branch winners will go forward to the regional heats in a bid to be named National Pub of the Year, which will be announced in early 2015.

Colin Valentine, CAMRA Chairman said: "I would like to thank all of the volunteers who have judged pubs up and down the country.

"It can take a lot of dedication to find the best real ale pubs in the area.

"We like to announce the winners in Community Pubs Month to highlight the best pubs Britain has to offer to help raise the profile of pub-going.”

New research shows 28 pubs close every week across Britain and 38 per cent of British adults no longer visit pubs.

Community Pubs Month has been launched to help raise the profile of the British pub and pub-going.

Thousands of pubs across Britain will be participating in this campaign by organising events and trying new marketing initiatives to attract more trade during April.

Mr Valentine continued: "There are literally thousands of wonderful pubs that need our support at this moment in time and I would urge everyone to visit their local pub in April and discuss with the licensee ways he or she could encourage you to visit more regularly.”

Among the best local pubs named in the Coventry and Warwickshire area were:

  • The Nursery Tavern, Chapelfields Coventry
  • The Royal Oak, New Street, Kenilworth
  • The Punch Bowl, The Butts, Warwick
  • The Griffin Inn, Church Road, Shustoke
  • The Lord Nelson, Birmingham Road, Ansley, Nuneaton
  • The Victoria Works, Redditch Road, Studley
  • The Victoria Inn, Lower Hillmorton Road, Rugby
  • The Holly Bush, Henley Street, Alcester
