Tunnel planned to help link Central Six with station

Postby dutchman » Wed Jan 29, 2014 8:51 pm

A six-metre wide tunnel for pedestrians will link Coventry railway station with Central Six.

It will pass under Warwick Road and avoid the need for people to cross the busy road to get to the shopping centre.

Council chiefs insisted the width of the tunnel meant it would not feel like a subway and there would be no steps down from the station.

Subways are already in use at the junction but will become obsolete when a massive pedestrian bridge deck linking Greyfriars Green and the city centre is built.

Bosses hope the ten-metre walkway - funded in part by another multi-million project - will be more welcoming and complement the upcoming Friargate development.

All of the projects have been made possible by funding from government and European grants. Work will start later this year and finish in late 2015.

Coun Rachel Lancaster, cabinet member for public services, said: "Securing further funding so we can bring forward some of the planned work is fantastic news.

"Once it's done there will be no more struggling up and down steps. No more crossing a busy road. And for the first time it will mean the station and Central Six are well connected.

"There will be some disruption while work is underway and I hope people will bear with us. The funding timescales are tight but we can’t turn this kind money down - the benefits are too great."

Do we not learn from the past? Subways have always been a muggers paradise :fuming: :fuming: :fuming:
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
