Canley families furious over four-week bin collection delay

Bin men have driven families to distraction by skipping their weekly rubbish services.

The residents of Thomas Sharp Street, in Canley, reached tipping point after being forced to go four weeks without a bin collection.

With waste piling up, residents were concerned the rubbish had become a health hazard, could attract vermin and was a danger to youngsters living nearby.

Richard Stewart, 40, said people had contacted Coventry City Council repeatedly about the missed collections from the 12 flats at the junction with Donegal Close.

He believes the issue had been caused by bin men refusing to walk less than 100 yards up the close to empty the bins after a garage area, previously used by refuse collectors to park the dust cart, was blocked by a car.

He said: “We just want to have the bins emptied on a regular basis and for the bin men to do the job they are paid for.

“It is ridiculous that, just because they can’t get their truck as close as possible, the bins haven’t been emptied.

“They need to stop making excuses and just get on with it.”

It is the second time residents have had problems with bin collections after making a similar complaint to the council last year.

Mr Stewart, who works as a lorry driver, said he believed the access issue was just an excuse to avoid emptying the bins.

He said: “I’m worried that one of the kids walking past it to school might fall over and there’s probably broken bottles and glass in there.

“There’s also health and safety issues with rats around.

“My girlfriend rang them last week and they said they couldn’t fit the bin lorry down the street.

“I drive a 44-tonne artic lorry and I can fit it down there, so why can’t they?”

Bins at the flats are usually collected by the council’s industrial waste collection team, while the flats are maintained by Whitefriars.

After being contacted by the Telegraph, Whitefriars cleaned up the overflowing waste yesterday while the council emptied the bins and said it was working with Whitefriars to resolve access issues.

A council spokesman said: “We have had an ongoing issue with getting access to the large bins as the entry has been blocked by cars when the crew have attempted to empty the bins.

"We have contacted Whitefriars who will be clearing overflowing waste while we resolve this issue.”
