Thriving local shopping streets are being ruined by chewing gum, according to an Earlsdon councillor.

Coun Allan Andrews has asked Coventry City Council to help improve cleanliness, after having received a number of complaints from local residents.

But he found the council does not have any equipment to remove chewing gum across the city.

In Coventry city centre , that service is paid for by the Business Improvement District, who work alongside the council.

Earlsdon’s traders may have to foot the bill for the removal - the machine would need to be hired from the BID at £70 an hour.

Coun Andrews said: “It is not a viable long-term solution for the council to simply say to communities ‘keep paying your council tax but look after yourself’ when it comes to basic issues like removing litter from our streets.”
