Wettest January in Coventry since records began

Postby dutchman » Mon Jan 27, 2014 8:02 pm

Coventry is now experiencing the wettest January since records began after the weekend’s storms and torrential rain.

Last week the Telegraph reported how a total of 110m of rain for the month so far meant that the city was in the midst of its wettest January for 54 years.

But now that record has quite literally been washed away after another 25mm of rain fell in Coventry over the weekend, particularly on Saturday afternoon, according to weather experts at Bablake Weather Station.

This has pushed Coventry in to its wettest January since records began in 1870 – the previous record being January 1939 when the city was covered with 132.7mm of rain.

The wettest day of the month for 2014 so far still remains Wednesday January 15 when 18.4mm plummeted down from the heavens.

This lags somewhat behind the wettest ever January day in Coventry which comes in at 30.3mm from way back in 1927 and even further behind the wettest day of any month, with that accolade currently held by a day back in December 1900 when the city witnessed 72.3mm.

A spokesman for Bablake Weather Station said of the forecast for the rest of the week: “Although it will be turning cooler with a couple of drier days midweek in our region, there is no sign of any change to this mild wet westerly airflow as we head into February, with further rain by Friday.

“In the meantime, a deep area of low pressure will cross our region early this week with a breezy, showery spell of weather for a couple of days.
