Andy Brown return delights Nuneaton Town manager Kevin Wilkin as he denies Northampton Town talk
KEVIN Wilkin has revealed his delight at seeing Andy Brown back in a Nuneaton Town shirt.
Brown came on for the final 15 minutes of Saturday's 0-0 draw with title chasing Cambridge United having been out since early October with a detached retina.
Manager Wilkin said: "I didn't know until late on Friday that he could play.
"He's done a lot in training but games are a different matter so I'm delighted he's back.
"Having him in your arsenal is a great boost."
Wilkin was swift to praise the contribution of the man who has replaced him that time.
Dave Hibbert continues to play with a series of knocks and Wilkin says he is a valuable member of the squad regardless of Brown's status.
"Browny's been a massive void to fill," said Wilkin.
"David has done very well by and large.
"Hibbo is a real honest boy.
"He felt fresher today than he did at Tamworth believe it or not
"He tired in the last 10 minutes there. They are great options for us."
The draw saw Boro slip a place to seventh in Skrill Premier, while Cambridge dropped to second after Luton Town thrashed Kidderminster Harriers 6-0.
U's boss Richard Money was adamant Cambridge should have won.
He was angered to see Luke Berry's 65th minute strike ruled out for offside.
Money also believed Theo Streete should have conceded two penalties, the first for handball.
Wilkin disagreed with his opposite number on all counts.
"There have been chances for either side second half. We carried the game totally to them in the first half.
"They are at the top of the league so they should beat us. They've got a budget four or five times the size of ours.
"I'm not sure how you can be convinced their goal was onside. I guess it's him speaking with a reaction a few minutes after the game when he is disappointed at not winning.
"If either of those penalty appeals went against you you'd be desperately disappointed. I think it's incredibly hard for a referee to give those.
"For the first one he's about 18 inches or two feet from the bloke."
Wilkin recalled Jon Adams to the team for the first team since November and although he withdrew him in the second half, Wilkin was pleased with the midfielder's contribution.
"Jon did very well.
"There is more to come from him.
"He'll be frustrated not to have played more but others have done well.
"Jon had 70 good minutes and I'd like to think he'll be fresh for Wednesday."
However, he insists he has not spoken with the League Two strugglers despite being heavily linked to his former club.
"I've had no contact with Northampton," he said.
"They are a great club that I've got connections with having played there.
"I think people look at that and mention my name.
"As I've said, it's flattering, but I've got a job to do here."
