Labour stalwart Brian Hawkes has been elected on to Warwickshire County Council, winning the Bedworth West seat once occupied by one of his close friends.

Keith Richardson lost a brave battle against cancer barely six months after being successful in the May elections and his widow Val was one of the first people to congratulate the new Shire Hall member.

Already a borough councillor and currently deputy mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth, Coun Hawkes polled 904 votes, to beat Tory candidate Janet Batterbee (353), with UKIP’s Andrew Hutchings on 142 and Trade Unionists Against the Cuts’ choice Natara Hunter trailing last with 46.
