A three-mile (4.8km) stretch of the M42 will be closed overnight for the next 17 weeks. The section between junction 3a in Warwickshire and junction 4, south of Solihull, will be shut between 21:00 and 06:00 GMT for road resurfacing.
The Highways Agency said a series of diversions were already in place but "some night-time disruption" was expected.
The scheme is scheduled to be completed by 28 February.
Southbound traffic on the M42 will be diverted at junction 4 along the A3400 Stratford Road, joining the M40 at junction 16, then rejoining the M42 at junction 3a.
Northbound traffic will join the M40 at junction 3a and continue east, leaving the M40 at junction 16 and heading north on A3400 Stratford Road to re-join the M42 at junction 4.
