Coventry energy bills '£267 more' than national average

Energy bills in Coventry are £267 more than the national average, new research has suggested.

Average spending on electrictity and gas in the city was £1,439 - the highest in the West Midlands.

The figures were revealed by consultancy WSP after analysis of government statistics.

Coventry was more than £100 more than the second highest figure in Solihull and £300 higher than Sandwell.

Homes were also found to be 25 per cent more energy efficient than eight years ago with the south west region found to be the best energy savers.

WSP technical director Paul Thomas said: “The regional variances and even variances between areas within larger regions are really quite dramatic in some cases.

"It’s interesting to analyse as, while to some degree the differences are down to factors such as temperature difference between north and south, house size and condition, there is also an element in the homeowner’s attitude to energy saving.

"Putting on an extra layer versus cranking up the heat will really affect the figures.

"As a region we’re not fairing too badly in the green league when it comes to energy usage, but it looks as though Coventry and Solihull have some energy saving homework to do."
