The officer suffered a suspected fractured pelvis attempting to stop the car in the Erdington area following reports of an intruder in a shed.

The 44-year-old was taken to hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

A 50-year-old-man was arrested in Aston after a short chase on foot, West Midlands Police said.

Officers searched the Compton Road area following a 999 call about an intruder in a shed just before 15:00 BST on Friday.

A short time later, a man matching the description of the suspect was spotted in a car on Oval Road.

The officer, from Sutton Coldfield police station who has served with the force for 11 years, attempted to stop the vehicle and was struck by the blue Honda estate, the force said.
