Officers raced to Tile Hill after a man in his early 20s - named locally as Ben Buckeridge - was blasted in the arm just after 2pm today.

One witness told the Telegraph at least five shots were fired into a property in Faseman Avenue, off Jardine Crescent.

The victim was taken to Coventry’s University Hospital with injuries to his forearm, but his condition is not thought to be serious.

A second man was seen helped in to an ambulance with injuries to his leg as a police helicopter circled overhead late into the afternoon fearing the gunman was still in the area.

Police said they believed the victim was deliberately targeted sealed off almost the whole length of Faseman Avenue, between Jardine Crescent and Langley Croft.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “Firearms officers are containing a block of flats in Coventry after a man was found with gunshot injuries.

“A man was later found with a gunshot wound to the lower arm and is now being treated in hospital – his injuries are not life threatening.

“Police understand it was a targeted shooting, not a random attack, and have contained a block of flats in the local area in their search for the gunman.”

Shocked groups of neighbours stood round watching the drama unfold but were reluctant to speak about the incident.

Many of them unable to return to their homes because of the police cordons while officers helped residents navigate police tape as more armed officers drove in to the area.

One man who lives in Langley Croft, who did not want to be named, said: “This is the second time they have had a shooting here.

"There was one a few months ago, there was a man going up here and someone took a pot shot with a revolver. Whether there is a bit of a war going on I don’t know.

“This happens on your doorstep and this is the first thing you hear about it – all the police around here with guns.”

Armed stand-off with suspected gunman in Tile Hill comes to an end

An armed siege on a Coventry housing estate has come to an end.

Police allowed residents holed up in an emergency evacuation centre at Tile Hill Library to return home after a stand-off with a suspected gunman which lasted until around 10.15pm.

Police marksmen with semi-automatic weapons had surrounded a property in Thomas Naul Croft, Tile Hill, after what West Midlands Police described as a “targeted” shooting.

The victim - a man in his early 20s named locally as Ben Buckeridge - was struck in the arm after five bullets were sprayed in to his home in nearby Faseman Avenue nearby at 2pm.

He was taken to Coventry’s University Hospital with injuries to his forearm, but his condition is not thought to be serious.

It sparked a huge manhunt as residents were evacuated, a large residential area was cordoned off and a police helicopter circled overhead.

Ward councillor Steven Thomas joined library staff in Jardine Crescent helping families forced to shelter there.

Speaking at 10.20pm, he said: “The situation is over and residents have been allowed to return home.

“Everyone is pleased to be able to go home to their own beds, not least library staff.

“We had a number of people who were unwell who needed medication but everyone’s needs were accommodated thanks to the great work of staff here.”

West Midlands Police have yet to release any information on how the siege was brought to an end.

Manhunt mounted for suspected gunman after man shot in Tile Hill

A manhunt has been mounted after a man was shot in Coventry yesterday afternoon.

Marksmen with semi-automatic weapons surrounded a flat in Tile Hill, late last night, in what residents initially thought was a stand-off between police and the shooter.

But officers have revealed this morning that they are still searching for the gunman.

Police were called to the scene after reports of a shooting in Faseman Avenue just after 2pm, where a man - believed to be in his 20s - was found with a gun-shot wound to his arm.

The victim was taken to Coventry’s University Hospital and underwent surgery before discharging himself last night.

Armed police, dog units and the force helicopter surrounded the block of flats where around 20 residents were evacuated as a precaution for their own safety.

West Midlands Police Detective Inspector Stuart Bell, said: “The flats in Tile Hill are no longer the focus of police attention, we have identified a possible suspect and concerted efforts are on-going to bring that person into police custody.

“We understand this was a targeted shooting, not a random attack.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact West Midlands Police on the 101 number or to call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
