A new £260,000 play area is to be created in Miners Welfare Park in Bedworth.

It will be funded by £180,000 from Warwickshire County Council’s Children, Young People and Families Directorate, through the government’s Aiming High programme, while the remaining £80,000 will come from money provided by developers in the borough.

Council cabinet members gave the scheme the go-ahead this week and Coun Bill Sheppard, portfolio holder for the environment, said: “This is fantastic news for Bedworth.

“We were faced with a situation where we had to spend this money by March 31. A lot of wrangling went on but we will now be able to replace the existing play area, which is 23 years old and coming to the end of its life.

“The new play area will be one of the most modern in the county.”

Coun Tony Lloyd said: “I remember a few years ago going along to a ceremony which awarded the Miners Welfare Park as the best in the country. I am sure this new play area will be something to again make everyone in the borough proud.”

Bedworth Miners' Welfare Park to get £80,000 improvements

IMPROVEMENTS costing £80,000 are to be carried out at Bedworth Miners' Welfare Park.

The council-owned site, in the heart of the town, will have a new cycle path, a green gym and a wildlife area, while the entrance gates, dating back almost 90 years, are to be refurbished.

The work is being funded through a deal between engineering company Brose and the borough council. The firm, which supplies the motor industry, is expanding its Colliery Lane factory by using a piece of land owned by the local authority.

Brose have contributed £50,000 to the park scheme, with the rest of the money coming from Section 106 new development contributions.

Councillor Ian Lloyd, cabinet member for arts and leisure, said: “People of all ages love to visit the Miners’ Welfare Park and we are continually working to make it even more of a popular attraction. “Only recently did we unveil a new play area within the park and now we are delighted to announce yet more improvements.

“ I would like to thank Brose for their support in making this happen and I am sure that the people of Bedworth will be impressed with the improvements once they are completed.”
