One well-known town in Warwickshire is the birthplace of one of the world’s most popular sports.

Most people have heard of Rugby – but contractors carrying out road works near Coventry’s TGI Island don’t seem too familiar with the place.

Motorists looking for directions to the town have been faced with huge letters painted on the A46 – to ‘Rogby’.

After the Telegraph contacted the Highways Agency contractors were hurriedly sent back out to correct the howler, made as long-running works come to an end on the northbound A46 near the A428 junction.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: “The error, which appears to be the result of retail park contractors working on our road, will be corrected as a matter of urgency to ensure the town name is spelt correctly.

“A temporary correction has (now) been made by our contractors.

“A permanent repair will be undertaken as soon as possible, at no cost to the Highways Agency or the taxpayer.”
