Coventry City Council will consider next week whether to review the licence for a Coventry nightclub over problems with noise.

Iglu nightclub in Spon Street, city centre, was served with a noise abatement notice by council officers in October after loud music was reported.

This notice was breached in May after loud music was again heard coming from the club.

A warning letter was sent to the club owners advising them to check the levels on their noise limiting device and ensure there were no breaches.

They were also threatened with prosecution if there was a second breach of noise at the club.

A decision will be made by the council’s licensing committee on Monday whether to review the club’s licence to stop any further problems with noise and disturbance.

Ahead of the meeting, Steve Dewar, environmental health officer for the council said: “We will be liaising with and meeting the club owners to ensure a satisfactory cut-off device is installed and working to prevent any further noise nuisance is caused by loud music from the club.”

In May, the club owners were also refused permission to extend its opening hours for three special events after police raised concerns about drugs, violence and gang related issues at the venue.

Nightclub allowed to keep licence with conditions

A nightclub has been allowed to keep its licence but with several conditions put into place.

Iglu in Spon Street, city centre, had been the subject of a licence review this week after concerns were raised about excessive noise late at night while several incidents of violence at the venue were reported to Coventry Police.

After a lengthy meeting this week, the council’s licensing committee decided the club could keep its licence but enforced 12 conditions for the owner and club manager to follow.

These included carrying out full searches of all customers and handbags, staff to be trained on dealing with conflicts and pouring all drinks into plastic cups after 1am.

Coun Rachel Lancaster, chair of the licensing committee, said the committee members had wanted to avoid completely removing the licence so the strict conditions were enforced.

She said: “To take away someone’s licence completely is a serious thing, given the fact that changes implemented by the club in the interim had proved effective and there had been no issues at the club since then.

“The committee chose on this occasion not to revoke the licence so we made the conditions so prescriptive that they have to be adhered to and followed.”

During the meeting, the committee heard from the licensing teams at Coventry City Council and Coventry Police, watched CCTV of incidents and drunken disorder at the club and also heard from Jerome Evans, the designated premises supervisor who is responsible for the day to day running of the club.

Coun Lancaster said Mr Evans had a lot of work to do in the next few days.

She added: “The club already had some conditions on their licence regarding CCTV and other issues so we have made things as tough as we possibly could for the club.

“Mr Evans has got a lot of work to do this week to get the conditions into place or they don’t open this weekend.

“This is their final opportunity to prove they can manage their premises within the law and turn Iglu into a respectable establishment.”
