The Changing Places toilet is the first in the city centre to cater for people with complex and multiple disabilities.

It includes a changing bench, hoist and specialist equipment for the disabled following a nationwide campaign, Changing Places, to build more accessible toilets in city centres.

The city scheme has been led by Coventry Mencap, a charity which supports those with learning difficulties, and has been funded by the council.

Coun Ann Lucas, the council’s cabinet member for community services, said: “It does improve people’s quality of life and will benefit many people.”

Coun Faye Abbott, who chairs the council’s Disabled Peoples Advisory Panel, said: “The library is an excellent location.”

There are two other Changing Places toilets, in Allesley and Stoke.
