Warwickshire probe found lamb kebabs 'made without lamb'

Some lamb kebabs sold in Warwickshire have been found to contain no lamb, according to trading standards.

The service said officers visited 20 establishments at random to purchase lamb dishes in January.

Tests showed none of the 20 lamb kebabs contained just lamb, with four having none of the meat. Only three of the 19 curries tested contained just lamb.

The probe followed a similar one into the sale of cod which showed all shops tested had sold the advertised fish.

Both cod and lamb have reportedly been substituted for cheaper alternatives at outlets across the country.

More investigations

The test curries and kebabs were purchased in Stratford-upon-Avon, Leamington Spa, Nuneaton and Rugby.

Simon Cripwell, from Warwickshire Trading Standards, said following the cod trials he had been surprised by the number of lamb dishes that had contained other meats.

He said: "The reason we focused on lamb is that it's a much more expensive meat.

"We want to ensure people get what they pay for."

He added that none of the curries tested contained high levels of artificial colourings but 14 of the kebabs did because of the marinades they had been served with.

Trading standards are due to contact the establishments involved in order to carry out further investigations.

Advice will then be provided to both retailers and the wholesale trade.

A spokesman for the Federation of Bangladeshi Caterers welcomed the findings by trading standards and said it would help the industry as a whole.

It would be interesting to know what they did actually contain?
