A new course that puts teenagers head to head to compete for internships is starting up at Foleshill Fire Station.

The two week course will see 14 teenagers who qualify as NEETs (not in education, employment or training) going head to head to compete for paid internships and work experience.

The organisers say the tasks they’ll have to complete will be a lot like the sort you’d see on The Apprentice or Dragon’s Den. They’re also getting leadership training and being put through assault courses and other excersises.

As well as giving the 16-18 year olds better job prospects this course is supposed to encourage teenagers with a history of anti-social behaviour to stop getting in trouble with the police.

One of the organisers from Whitefriars Housing, Gail Cooper, said: “What this course is very much about, as well as having an opportunity to test their invidual and team skills, is about changing their mindset so they understand the impact they’re having on the community.”

“This is a groundbreaking idea. It’s very much about them competing to win prizes at the end of it. We’ll evaluate how it goes and hopefully be able to replicate it. So watch this space.”

It will go from Monday 27th of February to Friday the 9th of March – where two apprentiships and two work experience places will be given to the four winners.
