Residents reported a number of short power surges during the evening in Binley, Willenhall, Whitley, Cheylesmore, Styvechale, Finham as well as Binley Woods.

Traffic lights on Clifford Bridge Road, Walsgrave, were even reported to be out.

One resident said street lights were out in Binley Woods at around 6.45pm

She said: “We’re at the top of the village. I looked out but there were no lights on in to Coventry. We’ve just had a big flicker but everything is still on.

“Earlier my husband said he looked towards Coventy and couldn’t even see a glow.”

There were also reports of temporary loss of power in Binley and the area around Swan Lane.

Others city residents experienced lights dimming.

The postman shoved a leaflet through my door yesterday telling me what a brilliant job Western Power* is doing! :clown:

*Western Power is the electricity distribution company for this area.

Faulty electric cable blamed for Coventry power loss

POWER cuts which hit hundreds of homes in the Coventry area this week due to a problem with electric cables.

Shoppers were evacuated from Morrisons in Binley on Monday night while residents experienced short power surges in Willenhall, Whitley, Cheylesmore, Styvechale, Finham and Binley Woods.

Traffic lights in Clifford Bridge Road, Walsgrave, were even reported to be out for a short period around 7pm.

A spokeswoman for the regional distributer Central Networks, part of Western Power Distribution, said: “We had a problem on Monday evening.

“People would have seen some flickering of supply as our staff were carrying out tests to find out which section of cable had the problem.

“They found the problem and have carried out full repairs in Coventry. We’re not anticipating any more problems.”

Residents reported street lights being out in Binley Woods as well as temporary loss of power in Binley and the area around Swan Lane. There were also numerous reports of lights dimming.

This was followed on Tuesday evening by further power cuts in the CV1 and CV3 areas of the city – which saw around 1,600 homes affected.

The Central Networks spokeswoman added: “The majority had power back within an hour.”
