A Coventry man has been found guilty of dragging an 84-year-old pensioner off a mobility scooter.

Darrell Morfett, 51, of Everdon Road, Holbrooks, was convicted of common assault after a trial at Coventry Magistrates Court yesterday.

The court heard the victim had been riding along Holbrook Lane on September 9 last year when he was physically and verbally attacked by Morfett.

The pensioner suffered a sore neck and other minor injuries.

Morfett will be sentenced at Coventry Magistrates Court on March 7.

Speaking after the hearing, senior crown prosecutor Fred Pilkington said: “This was an unprovoked attack on a frail and vulnerable victim.

“Due to this attack, the victim is too afraid to leave his home and was unable to give evidence at the hearing.

“Fortunately, the incident was witnessed by two members of the public who came forward and testified in court that they witnessed Darrell Morfett verbally and physically abusing him.

“I would like to thank the witnesses for coming forward and giving evidence because without them the case could not have been brought before the courts.

“Targeting individuals because they are old, infirm or vulnerable makes a crime even more serious.”
