Plans for a new betting office in Warwick town centre have been approved despite several strong objections.

The application was put in by William Hill Betting Limited last May and appeared before the Warwick District Council planning committee in December, which approved it.

The application is to turn 52 Market Place, which has been vacant, into a betting office.

However, objections had been raised from nearby residents and town groups to the plans.

In their objection the Warwick Society said it “would be seriously damaging to retail footfall.”

Nearby resident Stephen Chesterman added: “This particular area of Warwick has undergone substantial regeneration and improvement, creating a safe and family friendly environment, attracting quality retail stores, restaurants, cafés and importantly residents and tourists. A betting shop within this area totally undermines this regeneration effort. Why ruin it with the introduction of gambling?”
