Gemma Clifford (front row, centre) from Cardinal Wiseman School, was the main winner in the annual Rotary Club Design Awards.

A total of 280 pupils who are studying for GCSEs in food technology, textile technology and design and A-level design from 18 secondary schools and one special secondary school entered the awards.

Other budding young designers who won included Sean Morgan, of Coundon Court School, who designed a coffee table; Amina Naseer, who came up with an idea for innovative seating and designer jewellery; Nicole Hyare Sembi, of Stoke Park School, who created a primary school outdoor musical instrument; Alistair Sinclair, of Coundon Court School, who made a chair from recycled wood; and Chloe Reeve, also of Coundon Court, who designed an iPod dock.

They win cash prizes as well as the chance to visit the company which sponsored their award.

The winners and highly commended pupils were presented with their awards at a special ceremony at the Methodist Central Hall in Warwick Road, Coventry.

Coun Lynette Kelly (Lab, Henley), Coventry City Council’s cabinet member for education, said the entries were inspiring.

She added: “Every year our young people produce a range of fantastic creative designs. You can see the hard work and enthusiasm they put into each and every design and they should be very proud of themselves.”

Sponsoring companies for the awards were the Hilton Hotel, Henley College, the Broadweavers and Clothiers Company, NP Aerospace, Worix Ltd, Parenthesis, AGCO Corporation, Arup Associates, Sandvik Hard Materials, Jaguar Land Rover, DENSO Sales, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, City College Coventry and Coventry University. The pupils’ designs were enjoyed by visitors at a display at the Coventry Transport Museum in Hales Street, Coventry, this week.
