Firefighters tackled a blaze of a large pile of tyres at a disused scrap yard in Coventry on Tuesday.

Two fire crews from Foleshill were called to Jackson Road, Holbrooks, at 7.30am.

Police closed part of Holbrook Lane as firefighters spent more than an hour tackling the fire near Masala Jacks restaurant.

Adam Brady, crew manager for Foleshill fire station, said the fire was likely to be accidental.

But residents fear the scrap yard may have been targeted by arsonists following several incidents at Holbrook Park nearby.

Margaret Tasker, aged 65, of Holbrook Lane, said: “I came out of my house and saw plumes of smoke and then heard the sirens from the fire engines.

"We’ve had a lot of trouble at the park with people setting fire to rubbish. I can see them from my bedroom. They’re out there at 3am in the morning.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if the same group of people have set fire to the tyres.”

Neighbour Barbara Dunplay, aged 69, said: “I heard a loud bang and saw the fire engines. There was a lot of smoke.”
