Henley Market to close after 100 years

Henley Market in Warwickshire is holding its last day of trading before it closes, after 100 years, to make way for a housing development.



Shareholders sold the site in Warwick Road to developers three years ago.

Some of the 80 stallholders are moving to another site at Stoneleigh, where they hope to continue the Wednesday market.

One stallholder said the market's loss would be devastating for Henley.

'Way of life'

Carl Warrilow, of Carl's Bacon, has been at the market for 38 years.

He said the market was a way of socialising for some its customers and a "way of life" in the town.

"I know most of my customers by name and so do most of the stallholders," he said.

"There are characters here who have been coming since they were children, about 50 or 60 years."

About 50 stallholders are moving to the site at Stoneleigh, about 15 miles away.

Mr Warrilow said he was hopeful of being able to arrange transport for Henley customers to reach the market.
