Hundreds of ale drinkers descended on Coventry for the city’s annual beer festival.

Wooden barrels stretched the length of the bar at the Butts Park Arena where ale connoisseurs swigged their way through 8,000 pints this weekend.

The Spon End venue hosted more than 100 different beers – around 20 of which were local.

The Telegraph’s own beer experts, reporters Martin Bagot and Mary Griffin, joined industry figures on the judging panel for the West Midlands Beer of the Year competition.

Burton Bridge Bramble Stout came top as Specialist Beer.

Competition organiser Jim Witt, who is also a member for the Coventry and north Warwickshire branch of CAMRA, said: “Real ales are becoming more popular because of the range of tastes available.

“Small local breweries are passionate about beer and making the best pint. It doesn’t make sense mass producing a few drinks for everyone."
