It has been revealed 13 bosses on Coventry City Council are earning more than £100,000 a year.

New statistics from the Taxpayers’ Alliance show that out of all the West Midlands’ local authorities, only Birmingham has more staff on six-figure wages.

In comparison, both Rugby and Warwick Councils were paying just one member of staff a similar amount.

Coventry’s biggest earner was Chief Executive Martin Reeves, taking home £221,949, while 4 of the 13 received an average 6% payrise in 2009/10.

Chris Daniel, spokesman for the Alliance, said: “One explanation for this is that they have more semi-senior staff in the £50-80,000 salary bracket.

“Certain councils share senior staff, which has a huge benefit for taxpayers – it certainly seems to be a sensible option to remove the current overlap.”

“Councils certainly have a responsibility to the residents, while they’re looking through budgets to make cuts, to make sacrifices themselves.”

“In some cases, they should be taking a 5% or 10% paycut.”

I strongly dispute the term "earning".
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
