Muggers slashed a 78-year-old grandmother’s handbag with a knife in a shocking attack in a charity shop.
The mother-of-five and grandmother-of-ten was left shaken by the incident in Coventry city centre.
She had withdrawn cash from Lloyds TSB in Coventry city centre on Wednesday afternoon before walking to the Scope charity shop in Hertford Street.
The former nurse, who has suffered five heart attacks and a stroke in recent years, was browsing in the shop when one of the brazen pair attempted to distract her, while his accomplice used a knife to slash her leather handbag.
When the bag’s lining prevented the would-be thieves from grabbing the woman’s purse, one of the men made a grab for the bag’s zip.
The woman, who lives in the Allesley Park area and asked not to be named, said: “I turned to the man and said to him ‘you’re trying to rob me’. He denied it but then I shouted ‘police, police, there’s a thief in the shop’ and they ran out.
“I am just grateful they didn’t stab me, they did have a knife. They also didn’t get my purse or my money to pay the bills.
“I was sick to my stomach, I was just left thinking ‘oh, my God’.”
The victim was helped by shop staff following the incident and was left shaken but unhurt.
