Doctors at the BMI Meriden Hospital in Coventry have seen a surge of enquiries from men eager to undergo a bit of nip and tuck.

And interest in cosmetic surgery is up across the board, sparking a safety warning to patients.

Consultant and reconstructive surgeon Alan Park said: “The number of men we see has been gradually increasing for some time.

“I think it is because there has been a lot on television about male appearance, so men are not so embarrassed by it anymore. They feel like they can talk about it with their friends and come to us.”

The number of patients enquiring about cosmetic surgery has doubled since the New Year, BMI Healthcare told the Telegraph.

Men asking about gynaecomastia or ‘man-boob’ surgery rose the most, while women who wanted breast enlargements or lifts soared by a similarly staggering 179 per cent.

There is normally a seasonal surge in January and February, as people adopt a ‘New Year, New You’ ethos.

Mr Park said this year’s increase was larger than normal.

He believes this was because there was a drop during the last few years, probably driven by the recession.

Now people had gradually saved up the money, were being offered bank loans again or had simply tired of waiting and decided to press ahead regardless, he said.

But there are fears the bleak economic outlook could tempt some surgery seekers to turn to unscrupulous firms or even travel overseas in order to save money.

Doctors warn there have been several patients locally – and hundreds nationwide – who have been left with a hefty bill to correct botched operations or complications.
