Warwick District Council to spend £100K fighting HS2

A Warwickshire council has agreed to spend £100,000 on a campaign to try to stop the proposed High Speed Rail line through the county.



Warwick District covers Kenilworth – one of the places the multi-billion pound route is set to cut through.

The London to Birmingham line would also run along parts of Stoneleigh, although plans have been revised so as not to dissect the village.

Local councillors have agreed to double the amount they’d put aside to fight HS2 ahead of a public consultation on the scheme which is due to start any day now.

Every authority in Coventry and Warwickshire has decided to formally oppose the line, arguing it will be of little benefit to local people and will cut through valuable countryside.

It comes a day after Transport Secretary Phillip Hammond visited Birmingham to champion the project.
