Plans to develop the area around Coventry Railway Station will come under scrutiny today.

The Friargate proposal for a new business and residential district around the station is going before councillors with a revised traffic plan after concerns from residents about rat-running.

Outline planning permission for the first masterplan for the scheme – which developers say will bring £3 billion worth of net benefit to Coventry – was approved last year.

But after a series of monthly meetings with residents, developers have drawn up revised proposals and are offering to fund schemes to reduce the traffic impact on residential roads.

Stephen Reynolds, Friargate development director, said: “I think what you’ve got in Cheylesmore is an existing problem with rat-running.

“I’m prepared to concede that masterplan one was unsatisfactory in that it was likely to push additional traffic onto residential roads immediately south east of the station.

“But we’ve looked very carefully and done a lot of traffic modelling and redesigned the masterplan so it no longer pushes traffic onto those roads.

“And we’re backing that up with mitigation measures which will further reduce traffic on those roads.”
